Working Group on Article 8(j): Traditional knowledge of indigenous and local communities
The parties to the CBD are aware that indigenous and local communities depend on local biodiversity. Article 8(j) of the Convention acknowledges that these groups play a key part in looking after the diversity they use. Article 8(j) also highlights the importance and value of traditional knowledge held by such communities and the need to safeguard that knowledge. The parties agree in the Convention to preserve and maintain traditional knowledge and, crucially, to promote its wider application and equitable sharing of benefits that result. The Working Group on Article 8(j) was set up to support and advance a programme of work of the same name.
