Import of hunting trophies for personal effects

For the import of hunting trophies it is necessary to comply with the provisions of both international and national species conservation laws.

On the following pages you will find more detailed information on the conservation legislation concerning hunted species along with recent decisions on the issue of import permits with reference to individual populations.

The provisions may change at short notice due to decisions taken at national or international level. Although this information is revised regularly, the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation (BfN) can only guarantee the accuracy of this information up to the stated date of publication. For this reason, we recommend a telephone enquiry to the BfN on +49-228-8491-0 before the planned hunt. A telephone enquiry is also necessary if the species that you are interested in cannot be found in the alphabetical species lists.

These provisions apply exclusively to imports of hunting trophies from third countries (countries outside of the European Union) for personal effects.

 Alphabetical Species List

If you do not know the conservation status of the species you are interested in, you can access a list here sorted alphabetically according to common names in English. Each species is followed by a code indicating its conservation status or the designation 'n.p.' (not protected). A click on the code takes you directly to the appropriate page. This list of species only contains those mammals plus one species of crocodile which, in the experience of the BfN, are the animals most frequently hunted outside of the Federal Republic of Germany. All information relating to birds can be found on our page about the  'European Union Birds Directive'.
