Monitoring
Nach HELLAWELL (1991) wird Monitoring definiert als "Intermittent (regular or irregular) surveillance carried out in order to ascertain the extent of compliance with a predetermined standard or the degree of deviation from an expected norm." [Wiederholt (regelmäßig oder unregelmäßig) durchgeführtes Untersuchungsprogramm, das den Grad der Übereinstimmung mit einem vorher festgelegten Standard oder das Maß der Abweichung von einer erwarteten Norm ermittelt].
Monitoring für Naturschutz
In Anlehnung an Hellawell (1991) beinhaltet Monitoring für den Naturschutz
- "die wiederholte Erfassung des Zustandes von Natur und Landschaft oder deren Bestandteile sowie darauf einwirkender menschlicher Aktivitäten,
- das Wahrnehmen von Veränderungen und
- die Ausrichtung auf feste Zielsetzungen (z. B. als Grenzwert) oder Fragestellungen, die einen Anwendungsbezug haben" (DRÖSCHMEISTER 1996)
Monitoring of Biodiversity
Die AutorInnen beziehen das Monitoring auf das 2010-Ziel nach der Konvention zur Erhaltung der Biologischen Vielfalt (CBD):
"If [...] organizations are to achieve progress toward this objective, they will need to measure how well they are doing. This will require a series of standardized, regularly repeated measurements of the state of biomes and their biota. [...] these measurements must capture information on the area of biomes; the diversity, distribution, and abundance of species; and the provision of ecosystem goods and services. It is clear, however, that there is a great deal of work to do before the scientific community can generate reliable time series of data relevant to this target for a wide range of biomes and attributes at the global level." (GREEN et al. 2005)
