Explanation of assessment levels used at biogeographic seminars
| SUF |
sufficient representation: Sufficient representation, no more sites need to be proposed. |
| SUF (CD) |
Sufficient representation, provided some corrections to data are made or can be made (e.g. completing missing data in obligatory data fields: CD, Correct Data or Check Data, assuming probably sufficient) |
| IN MIN |
insufficient representation, minor: Insufficient representation, but insufficiencies can (generally) be remedied by entering species or habitat types in the standard data forms of sites already proposed. This was handled at the Community assessment meetings as follows: Where knowledge was uncertain, IN MIN was assigned in several cases on the assumption that the claim made at the Community assessment meeting that non-notified occurrences do actually occur in the sites proposed proves to be correct. This can mean in individual cases, upon review, that slight extensions of sites need to be made, or even that in certain cases new sites must be proposed. |
| IN MOD, IN MOD G |
insufficient moderate: Insufficient representation, more sites need to be proposed. Where there are geographical gaps, these are indicated by the ‘I MOD G’ code and supplemented at the assessment meeting by additional codes, e.g. ‘N’ to indicate the north of the biogeographical region. Where no such additional codes are assigned, insufficiency applies in principle to the entire suite of proposed sites or (almost) the whole of Germany. |
| IN MAJ |
insufficient major: Insufficient representation, whereby no or very few sites have been proposed so far (major need to propose more sites). |
| OPEN |
No final conclusion could be reached, more in-depth review is required (this rating was used only at the Alpine meeting). This rating corresponds to ‘SR’ in the conclusions for the Atlantic and Continental regions. |
| SR |
scientific reserve: Scientific examination of data and/or sites is required. At the seminars, this code was assigned above all in the case of interpretation or classification errors of habitat types. It was also assigned in cases where there were very large uncertainties concerning the proportion of sites proposed in relation to the estimated overall resource, which required a review of the proposal data and/or of the overall resource estimate. This code was assigned to species whose distribution within a member state is not sufficiently clarified - here it depends upon the clarification of distribution whether additional proposals are necessary or not. |
| MR |
marine reserve: Scientific examination required for marine habitat types and species, including the marine sub-habitats of anadromous migratory fish species and cyclostomes. This is because the member state proposals in the EEZ (exclusive economic zone, 12-200 nautical miles) have not yet been submitted and, in addition, the state of scientific knowledge about overall resources is not yet sufficient. An assessment must therefore be conducted at a later time. |
