DNL - online (in German) is the BfN’s nature conservation and landscape management literature database. It currently houses over 150.000 references (largely from publications issued from 1980 onwards).

The database comprises data taken from the BfN library and documentation unit and includes all types of publications. Some 65 percent of the publications listed are articles published in journals and compilations. Around 900 periodicals were analysed for suitable input; grey literature and online sources are also included.

DNL-online is updated on a regular basis.

 Habitat Mare Natura 2000 (in German) reports on the status and reasoning behind designation of special conservation areas (under the Habitats Directive) and protection areas (under the Birds Directive) in Germany’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEA, 12-200 sea miles).
The Federal Environment Ministry (BMU) and the Federal Nature Conservation Agency (BfN) have been responsible for selecting and designating Natura 2000 sites in Germany’s EEZ since 2002.

The  NaturSportInfo portal (in German) focuses on the impact of sport and recreation on flora and fauna, providing a wide range of background information and standardised abstracts taken from the literature. It also contains links, definitions and conflict resolution models.

The portal allows faster access to data and facts, assists identification of potential conflict situations and aids evaluation. It also provides for more informed dialogue, improved knowledge and aids detection of knowledge gaps.

The large number of national and international treaties and regulations that apply in species protection work make it difficult to maintain an overview.

The  WISIA-online is an online species protection database which gives users fast and easy access to information on the animals and plants protected under law applicable to Germany. It also provides information on flora and fauna that enjoy priority protection. Data is provided either in tables or in the form of individual datasheets.

 ZEET-online provides information on all case-specific decisions concerning trade in wild animals from specific countries of origin which are applicable in the EU and must be considered in approval processes as prescribed in Regulation (EC) 338/97.

ZEET publishes a full alphabetical listing of the animal species contained in Annexes A and B of Regulation (EC) 338/97, whose import into the EU is subject to case-specific decisions made jointly by all member states.

 PortalU - Germany’s Environmental Information Portal provides easily accessible information which, among other things, draws from nature conservation resources provided by government agencies.

At present, users can access over a million web pages and database entries containing information from more than 100 government agencies at national and Länder level. This includes information that may not be retrieved by other search engines, making the ‘hidden web’ accessible to anyone interested in nature conservation and environment protection. A high-performance search engine and structured access make for easy and effective research. Environment-related press releases published by relevant government and non-governmental organisations can be accessed on the day they are published. An environmental almanac, direct links to websites containing environmental measuring standards, information on upcoming events and a variety of publications complete the range of services.

The Biodiversity Clearing House Mechanism is the central information, communication and cooperation platform set up under the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). The parties to the Convention aim to establish a network of national CHMs to promote research and technical cooperation between countries everywhere, foster exchange and improve access to information and data on CBD implementation.
